  1. Start up from an Ubuntu live CD.
  2. At the main menu, try to figure out what version of Ubuntu this is.
  
  What happens: You have to start the live CD session (which takes several
  minutes), then choose "Help" > "About Ubuntu".
  
  What should happen: The version number (e.g. "8.04", or "Intrepid Ibex
  alpha 3") should be visible immediately underneath the Ubuntu logo.
  
  I experienced this problem when I accidentally started up with an Ubuntu
  8.04 live CD instead of an Intrepid one.
