I was affected by bug #319118, I think it's a little bit different than this
bug but since it has been marked as duplicate I'm posting here.
The "snd_pcm_avail_update() returned a value that is exceptionally large" bug
as been fixed for me with pulseaudio 0.9.14-0ubuntu10, but now I get a
different error:

module-alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but
there was actually nothing to write! Most likely this is a Linux bug.
Please report this issue to the ALSA developers. We were woken up with
POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail_update() returned 0.

I get quite a lot of these errors, about 250/hour.
