This still exists on jaunty/8.10 with all updates installed to date.

sudo mount -t devpts devpts /dev/pts is still required after reboot to access 
gnome-terminal, konsole etc.
I wonder if shm is configured properly, because on some apps I get (those using 
pulseaudio, I guess) E: shm.c: shm_open() failed: permission denied
