@Kai, Well, I straced Open Office1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1 that ships with Ubuntu Jaunty, and I can tell you it calls fsync() after finishing to write out files that it is saving. When you say data loss, was this with a file you had just saved using Open Office? Details are important in understanding what may have happened.
