Ok I'm back.... again.... I'm still using the same kernel by the way.... I thought I had solved the problem.
However the system hasn't remembered the setting, I'll try a reboot in a second, and each window that opens seems to have an issue with deciding which layout to choose! Also the english layout is active on the french keyboard sometimes and the French on the English!! I guess that this was actually the real problem, and mixing of the layouts that are available to the system, obviously they are being activated / changed with the use of the CAPS lock key (even though this isn't the "default" setting - I haven't changed anything I just looked).
