I tried downgrading to the 1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5~andersk1_amd64 version and still had the same problem. Then, I downloaded the source to the current xserver-xorg-core and it seems like the 158_maxclients patch is no longer applied so apparently that has nothing to do with the current problem.
