I agree that bug #215620 may be the same. I hadn't previously run top, but I see the same behavior: gtk-gnash using 25% cpu while the video does not play. However, no one there reported success with any videos, and I am able to view *some* videos (though they seem to be in the minority).
Can anyone comment on the codec idea? If I have time myself, I will dig into whether youtube uses different codecs and how gnash deals with codecs, but I'm hoping someone already knows :).
