i can confirm that bug with a Dell Mini 9 (inspiron 910) i've just
bought, running default Dell-customed-Ubuntu.

Without updates it worked fine
Since i've done an update, i have that bug

Although i'm french, my keyboard is always set on QWERTY on startup
instead of AZERTY

The setxkbmap workaround worked for me

I agree with Filippo Argiolas who wrote on 2009-02-26 :

"I believe Ubuntu Hardy shipped with Dell Mini 9 is also affected by this bug
(it uses autologin), at least it is after latest upgrades.
As far as I can tell it worked fine before the upgrades so it could be fixed
reverting the change that introduced it, I don't know but maybe it would be
easier than going through a SRU to backport upstream patches."

I guess that french Dell customers will not be very happy with that
situation since mots users don't browse launchpad everyday...
