1. Availability: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/a/aria2/
for all architectures 2. Rationale: Aria2 supports multithreaded segmented download, thus greatly speed up download. Also it has support for http(s), ftp and bittorrent protocol and allow downloading of a file using multiple protocols at the same time http://aria2.sourceforge.net/ aria2 actually supercedes wget and users should be encourage to use aria2 instead of wget. by including aria2 into main, we can encourage users to use aria2 instead of wget. 3. Security no CVE or secunia entries found for aria2 no binaries run at root or suid/sgids, no daemons Network activity: download of the above protocol only download data, but does not process files 4. QA package always work out of the box - no debconf questions asked - no significant bugs in debian or ubuntu (other than "no IPv6 support") - upstream updates approximately eveery 6 month-1 year - good debianand ubuntu support - the universe package was automatically ported from debian 5. UI: - text-only 6. standards compliance: complies to FHS, Debian policy and debian library packageing guide lintian check shows no error or warnings 7. Dependencies: libc-ares2 library for asyncronous name resolves dep: libc6 (>= 2.4) GNU C Library: Shared libraries also a virtual package provided by libc6-udeb dep: libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) GCC support library dep: libgcrypt11 (>= 1.4.0) LGPL Crypto library - runtime library dep: libgnutls26 (>= 2.4.0-0) the GNU TLS library - runtime library dep: libsqlite3-0 (>= 3.6.10) SQLite 3 shared library dep: libstdc++6 (>= 4.2.1) The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 dep: libxml2 (>= 2.6.27) GNOME XML library dep: zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4) compression library - runtime all in main except libc-ares2. I will file a separate MIR report for libc-ares2 shortly. This should be eassy because libc-ares2 only depends on libc6. 8. Maintenance simple package needs very little maintenance. Currently looked after by Ubuntu MOTU developers, because it is automatically synced from debian Quoting Martin Pitt <martin.p...@ubuntu.com>: > Hm, there are certainly several download tools in the universe, but > what > would be gained with including it in main?
