The agere_sta_fw.bin file was indeed corrupted (it was 89729 bytes long) I used recode to fix the file and now I have working WPA (not WPA2 though) with the agere/hermes card and linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic. The firmware should really be available in the linux-firmware package but so far it is not in Jaunty. Thank you very much for you help.
