I haven't found a fix, but I found out the corruption is different for
different resolutions. I did the following:
I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst by adding "vga=ask" to the kernel line. Now GRUB
asks you which resolution to use for the splash screen. I tried several
resolutions. As far as I can remember this were the results:
- 1600 x 1200: corruption as seen on the photo of comment #1;
- 1024 x 768: usplash doesn't display the boot screen corrupted, but the boot
screen is on the right side of the screen, instead of in the middle;
- 800 x 600: The middle of the screen is black, the right half of the boot
screen is on the left side of the screen, while the left half of the boot
screen can be found on the right side of the screen;
- 640 x 480: No boot screen at all is displayed, the screen just stays black.

I've tried splashy, instead of usplash and these are the results:
- 1600 x 1200: The same corruption as with usplash;
- Lower resolutions: The boot screen is displayed correctly.
