Very similar problem: Dell Inspiron 1525n laptop with built-in digital
microphone. Worked fine with 7.10 and 8.04LTS. Upgraded to 8.10 and
Skype stopped working. Fiddled with many settings and got it working,
but digital mic input is so low, it's almost inaudible. This has been
reported by many. Apparently, there was a mic boost feature that is no
longer visible in alsamixer. I've tried several workarounds but none
have been successful. For the last week, I've been trying Kubuntu 9.04
Alpha 6. It has the same problem.
