Maybe you mislead my problem and I'm sorry. The lag is only present when multiple notifications are executed.
So I tried this: time ./test-notify.sh which has a result of 1.045s with notify-osd and 0.8s on the vanilla session (though they don't display the vanilla volume osd, but the yellow baloons).
