Maybe you mislead my problem and I'm sorry.
The lag is only present when multiple notifications are executed.

So I tried this:
time ./test-notify.sh

which has a result of 1.045s with notify-osd
and 0.8s on the vanilla session (though they don't display the vanilla
volume osd, but the yellow baloons).

I don't know if this command can hisolate the problem, but for sure if
I start a vanilla session the volume indicator has no lag when keeping
the hotkey pressed. so the problem is in notify-osd or in the graphic
driver?
