After intensive search I found that the appearance of the OSD theme is not set under Appearance, but under TV settings, and it is called Playback OSD.
However, I actually did not change anything but just clicked my way through, and then it was working. Well, almost. The default setting is messed up and flips from bottom to top, and then does not contain the OSD text in its frame, spilling over into the video and is barely legible.
