I am also having the same issue. I recently purchased an HP Pavilion DV7
series laptop. It comes with an IR port and a card sized mce remote.
Ubuntu does not detect the IR port. I have attempted every work around
that I could find online from google and ubuntuforums. I did notice
several other people complaining about the same thing. Some say a few
buttons work, some say none of them work. I've installed lirc and gnome-
lirc-properties, also tried irda-utils. No matter what options I select
the port is either not detected or the buttons I press do not respond.

The remote works fine in Windows so I know its not a problem with the
remote or the port. Also there are no settings in the BIOS for the IR
port so I cannot configure anything there.

I have tested this using the 32bit and 64bit version of Intrepid as well
as the 64bit version of Jaunty Alpha6. All of them have the same
results.

When attempting irw it acts as though its waiting for feedback but when I press
any of the buttons I get nothing on the screen.
When I do a cat /dev/ttyS[1-3], as suggested in some of the work arounds
online, I receive an IO error on each one.
