It also happens in 8.10 on my Eee 1000, which has an Intel GMA950 as
opposed to the 701's GMA900. I hadn't realised that compiz caused it,
but Jngoi is right; I just tried opening Firefox with and without compiz
enabled several times. It happened zero times with compiz disabled, and
all the times it was enabled. I've attached a screenshot to illustrate
the problem.

It doesn't seem to do any harm (noticeably low performance unusual even
for netbooks and the like), but it just looks weird, and having had a
computer that did it when it was about to freeze completely, I find it
rather disconcerting. ;-)
