I tried the solution that torstenaf suggested and it didn't work. Then I went ahead and tried Marcus' hack recommended by earlier posters (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/275998/comments/109). This worked for me and fixed skype, but I couldn't get sound recorder to work, although this is less important for me.
