After reading ALSA-Configuration.txt and digging through some similar bugs i thought i should give ac97_quirk=hp_only a try. Unfortunately this does not fix my problem. Since ALSA-Configuration.txt suggests that the master channel is sometimes swapped with other channels I have enabled all available controls in the mixer applet and played with each of them.
