I'm an idiot! sorry, I never killed the perl program that had been hogging the lcd device. once i did that lcdproc and LCDd both worked fine! and xbmc even sends info to the screen.
the one thing that's still a problem is that the damned thing stays on even when the computer is shutdown. Do you have that same issue?
