Daniel Thanks for getting back to me. I think this issue is really important to sort out as Intel Core 2 (+chipsets) are currently ruling in the laptop market. This sound problem could potentially affect a large number of (potential soon to be ex-!!) Ubuntu users.
Not sure if you wanted the ALSA script output before or after I added that magic line to my alsa-base.conf file!!
