The simple solution is that there are two places in which settings must be changed. The first is in Nvidia settings as root user - run: sudo nvidia-settings from terminal. Second, change the resolution settings under System-Preferences-Screen Resolution You may need to reboot between steps.
That second step is so basic it is often overlooked. No cutting and pasting xorg.conf, no dangerous dabbling in forbidden zones.
