created a patch for /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20
-video-quirk-pm-acer.fdi .

with that file patched, I can suspend using gnome power manager, and
wake up, but killing vbetool as discribed above will crash the mashine.
so its better than the original situation, but not a complete fix.
