I have this very same issue now on my machine as well. I had upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. As a result of encountering very similar issues mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver- xorg-video-ati/+bug/350120, I decided to do a clean install of 9.04 by wiping out all my partitions except my /home partition. I was hoping that would address my problem, but instead I get complete random freeze ups described in this report. In hopes of getting this issue resolved I will post the information from apport-collect soon.
