I've played around a bit to see if i can find out more about the problem. It looks like it is a problem with the radeon driver.
I tried the secure graphics mode and it had the same problem. I also tried a knoppix cd and it only starts with the options „acpi=off noapic pci=bios“ otherwise the same problem. I currently use Kubuntu 8.10 and tried to switch to the free radeon driver. After that the system also hangs if it trys to start the xserver (some flicker in the boot screen, no keypress works), but if i start it from the rescue console it works. If i add the options „acpi=off noapic pci=bios“ the system doesn't hang but the screen is blank. After a while (3 trys to start the xserver) i can get to the console. I've copied the log files after that step so hopefully somebody can help me.
