Public bug reported: Currently apport will ask a user if they want to submit a bug, then bring them to Launchpad where the user is met with a variety of options when filing a bug. Its clear, from subscribing to many bug reports, that theres several points of confusion about what this involves.
1. Non-technical users don't understand technical details of the bug like "undhandled exception in...", process signals, or exit statuses. It is unreasonable for them to make a decision as to weather or not a bug is a duplicate based on this info. The language on the bug reporting page should be modified to say something like "I think my bug looks like this" or "Launchpad thinks these bugs are similar. Do you want to subscribe/contribute to an existing report or start a new report?" 2. It is apparent from the volume of e-mails that are sent to Launchpad bug subscription lists with only the word "unsubscribe" in the body or subject that the current apport workflow encourages users to subscribe to bugs when they have no meaningful or valuable information to contribute, particularly when they are reporting a duplicate. Something should be done to alert these users that subscribing to a bug means they may get a lot of techie e-mail. There should be some sort of option box like "please allow developers to contact me for further information" vs "please subscribe me to all developer discussions related to this bug (you may get lots of very technical e-mail)". This issue has a major, negative impact on the Ubuntu and Launchpad communities. It makes it difficult for people who are interested in bugs to go about reporting and fixing them in an orderly manner, and it makes end-users averse to participating in the bug reporting process. This issue should be addressed in either Launchpad, Apport, or both. ** Affects: apport Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: malone Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apport Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: malone Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Apport should make clear to non-technical users what happens when submitting or subscribing to a bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357358 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
