A similar problem happens to me. I have an LG DVD-Writer (attached in the comment all the dmesg, etc outputs) and if I use k3b with auto speed setting then my disc gets damaged with the writer only attempting to start writing but never successfully doing it. It's like speeding up then down and so for 3-4 times before it gives an error.
Manually setting the write speed to 12x makes it work. In Windows I never had this issue so I suspect my drive doesn't have a problem..but k3b might.
