Yes, I saw the mga_hal comment. The mga_hal is a binary only part of the driver which gets loaded in to perform certain functions on certain mga cards. I had a look but couldn't find the mga_hal binary on my system at all, implying that it doesn't need this for dual head mode. Presumably there's something different about your card or your xorg.conf that makes it require this. Will have a look at the code later and see if I can work out what.
