today after updating, the volume control showed up and it is fully usable on my computer. However after clicking it, it looks weird because it zooms in like a new window (compiz zoom effect) rather then just poping up like how the network status icon does when clicked. I suppose that is a whole different problem though :) thank you to the devs who got this working.
