If you can't boot your system at all some other ways: - the dmesg output is contained in /var/log/kern.log you can best get it by mounting the root volume on a live-cd and copying the file from there. You can also generate the lspci output there.
If you want to know where the system hangs you can disable the splash screen on boot: when grub comes up with the boot list select your new kernel and press e to edit the configuration. On the next screen select the kernel line and press e again to edit it. There delete quiet and splash. Then press enter to save it and then b to boot.
