The conclusion is neither. I think this might be a Nautilus problem. And here's why: Mounting/unmounting alone does not hang up the system. Neither does short term use of a single file or two from a mounted drive. But extended use of the mounted drive causes system hang up. As does transferring large size or large quantity of files, to or from the mounted drive.
