A couple of things come to mind, but the forums would be a better place to take this conversation: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=352 That aside, if you can still use synaptic at all you could use the history option to see what packages you've removed, or possibly the fix broken packages option. You could also try selecting recovery mode from the boot menu and then when it's done running you'll come back to a menu with several options. >From there select dpkg - repair broken packages.
