Thanks for the quick response! I have tried the same file (which is less than 1000 lines of LaTeX) in Kate and it's faster (in fact, as fast as would be expected). One thing that I should've mentioned is that I set Kile to display text in Courier New (from the standard Microsoft fonts package). Kate shows text in Liberation Mono. Having seen this, I reset Kile to Liberation Mono, I found that it's faster (especially on individual key presses), but still slower than Kate, especially on page down.
