Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-180
Environment: the PC is a multi-GPU machine. A NVIDIA9800GTX+ serves as the main GPU, while an older 6600 is the secondary. Three screens are connected in total, 1 to the 9800 and the other 2 to 6600. Motherboard is an Asus P5K, with two x16 wide PCI-E slots, one of which has only a x4 link, and this is where the older card sits. Error pops up on releases: 9.04rc AND 8.10. Works flawlessly on 8.04. Situation: Either from installed system, or livecd, doesn't matter. 1. Default config doesn't recognize the second gpu. 2. Installed nvidia drivers using the provided proprietary driver tool, Jockey or Envyng (depending on release) 3. Added "/usr/lib/nvidia" to /etc/ld.so.conf.d (in a file named nvidia.conf), this is needed for nvidia-xconfig in the next step to work 4. Ran nvidia-xconfig -a 5. Generated xorg.conf works, has only 2 screens (of 3 connected) and no Xinerama - desktop shows only on 1st monitor, the other is black, but mouse pointer can travel there 6. Edited xorg.conf to add second head on secondary GPU. Xorg works, still only one desktop, others are black (as above) 7. Edited xorg.conf, added Option "Xinerama" "on" to ServerLayout Result: xorg crashes instantly. Sometimes also results in screen corruption in text mode, turning the console unusable (reset, consolefont etc. don't help). Attached are (in a zip archive): Xorg log xorg.conf dmesg info from boot, and from the crash (a few segfaults at the end) lsmod output output of dpkg-query nvidia-glx-180 Note again: Bug exists since 8.10, and affects ONLY the multi-gpu situation. ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Xorg hard crash on nvidia multi-gpu system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363011 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
