Ok, so I figured out that dm-raid4-5 is now in Intrepid, which would explain why patching with older code would produce those errors. But I still have this error identifying /dev/sdb-e (sda is a separate 40GB boot drive that works just fine).
I thought maybe there is a newer dmraid than in the current Intrepid 8.10, which is 1.0.0-rc14.
