I disabled swapping and the problem occurs less frequently since then.
Having no swap means that the the high disk activity after resuming from 
stand-by is due to something that goes on at file system level (I'm using 
ext3). I'm more than willing to help sort out this issue if anybody could tell 
me how.

This is a report of what I got after the last slow resume, which I eventually 
recovered from
$ uptime
