I owe you an apology for putting this posting here. What I wanted was to know whether anyone else had had the same problem, and I now realise I should have gone to a questions forum first.
I have had a few problems with Evolution, but on checking the forums I find that they have already been reported as bugs by others - all except for the issue with polling. However, on reconfiguring Evolution I have been unable to recreate it, and I do not see why. In the absence of further information it is not worthwhile to pursue it. So, again with apologies, I request that this thread now be categorised as "Not a bug".
