I have the same problem.
My PC has a Intel GMA965 chipset.
I have switched from the regular mode to de UXA mode in XORG

Section "Device"
        Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
        # ...
        Option        "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

But even without that, has the same problem.
The only way i can make it work, is using static MesaGL version of Blender.
But the lack of the true OpenGL implementation, has several performance issues.
