I have the same problem here with Ubuntu Jaunty RC! I talked to some pidgin-guy in the irc, he said that he cannot remember to have such "new feature", so this seems to be some ubuntu-specific change maybe together with the new notification system? I disabled the libnotify-plugin but it didn't help.
