I have the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite notebook.

The surprising fact: If I remember correctly, with older releases of
ubuntu the USB WLAN device dis- and reappeared on the lsusb list when
switching on and off even if there was no driver and the device was
completely unsupported. I always believed that the switch at the
notebook's front was a hardware switch taking the device away from the
USB.

Should be fixed. With hardy and intrepid I used a self compiled driver
which dealed with the switch correctly, so it should not be a big deal
to get a fix for that problem.
