Public bug reported: I just upgraded to the latest Ubuntu version. I simply let the upgrade process run in the background, while I was just coding on the foreground. Just some terminals open and a firefox instance. After a while, it started reporting some problems on several things that couldn't be installed. Also, I couldn't "sudo" anymore. Soon I found out the reason: /etc/passwd had been removed. I couldn't even boot anymore, since you quite badly need that file. Even recovery mode didn't work properly.
I managed to fix my installation. I first boot using a ubuntu boot CD, copied /etc/passwd- to /etc/passwd, fixing the permissions. Then I found out that my graphical interface didn't work anymore, as both my mouse and keyboard froze the moment it started. I managed to stop gdm from starting when booting. Then I had to reinstall (well, actually, just reconfiguring I believe did the job): - ubuntu-desktop - hal - dbus That fixed my installation, and now I'm yet another happy J-user. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ubuntu installation bricked after upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
