I have exactly the same problem with installing Propriatary drivers + a nasty side effect. My screen goes into power save after about 10 min. of running Ubuntu 9.04. I assume this is a ACPI issue of some kind, was hoping to fix it with Nvidia's binary driver... but ran into the problem mentioned in this thread. :(
