Workaround: I put an executable file called 0defaultgw in directory /etc/ppp/if-up.d/ All it does is add a default route with the command
route add default gw 10.49.0.1 ppp0 Not very sophisticated, I know. But it did the trick. If anyone knows a better way, please let me know.
