Same here (ATI IXP AC97). Sound didn't work properly since 8.04, so I had to stuck to Hardy.
The sound breaks at a random moment of time and remains broken until a reboot. Sometimes it doesn't work from the beginning. Sometimes it works for nearly an hour, then breaks. It doesn't depend on what I do at all.
