The same happen to me on Compaq Armada E500 with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic: 
kernel panic during boot process.
After blacklisting radio_maestro I get normal boot.
I didn't have any troubles while using previous version of kernel (2.6.27.... 
ubuntu 8.10).
