I followed your instructions, and perfectly understand what you are
saying, and was surprise when it did not work.

There aren't many more details to give- just to note that every time I
log in, Tomboy is present as an icon in the notification area on my
panel.  There is no .gnome2/sessions file.  There is no entry for Tomboy
in System > Prefs > Startup Apps either.

The only way I have found to get rid of this behaviour is to uninstall
Tomboy.
