I have experienced the same issue with a Nokia 5200, either in Nokia connection mode or in USB Storage mode.
I have tested it on several machines with Ubuntu Dapper and Edgy and the same thing happens, I get to read some files and after a few moments it stops reading or freezes the whole system.
