The same is happening with KDE too. Volume gets muted every 60 seconds or something. Disabling pulseaudio following this guide helped: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/ubuntu-904-jaunty-keeping-the-beast-pulseaudio-at-bay/
