I just realized that I forgot to mention in an earlier post(2009-04-26)that after accessing Thunar with a live cd, I opened a terminal and typed *xfce4-panel*. This brought the panel back. I then got in to the XFCE Settings Manager and opened Sessions and Startup and made certain *Automatically save session on logout* was checked. Then, when I re-booted I did have the XFCE Panel. So the system is usable, just not very convenient.
