Found it! After executing "sudo pm-suspend" the logfile in /var/log/pm-suspend.log showed, that a a script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ causes an error when trying to suspend. (I used this on 8.10 to rescan usb when resuming docked, but the script doesn't have a rule for suspend - which is obviously needed on 9.04)
