Yes, you are right. But flickering (CPU related) appears even on a X1300 Mobility.
In git you can find several bugfixes due to the flickering/blanking problem (http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati/log). But I don't know which fix handle your problem.
